What is 3D printing exactly?
FDM 3D Printing (Fused deposition modeling)
3D printing is the process of converting a three dimensional digital file created on a computer to a physical object, usually by creating many thin layers.
Fused deposition modeling is the most common and inexpensive way to 3D print. This method of additive manufacturing uses a plastic filament extruded through a heated nozzle, much like a hot glue gun. The machine moves the nozzle to "draw" 2D layers. Each layer builds upon and fuses to the previous to create a 3D part.
FDM printers can use various types of plastic with different structural properties and can achieve surprisingly detailed results.

SLA 3D Printing (Stereolithography)
Stereolithography modeling works by using a laser to harden liquid resin that is contained in a reservoir to create the desired 3D shape. The concept is the same as FDM, each layer is hardened and added to the previous one. However, this method can create the entire layer at once and lifts the part out of the resin tub one layer at a time.
SLA printers also have an assortment of materials to choose from however this method has much greater accuracy and perfect detail when compared to FDM. This process does require post processing which involves washing and curing each part.
